Happy Chinese New Year (Year of the Monkey)!
I know CNY is coming to a close, but I was too busy that I haven't found a chance to blog. This is our second year of celebrating CNY as a married couple, and surprisingly, despite being married, we received angpows from John's parents and grandparents still! I thought the notion was that we'd stop receiving once we're hitched, and have to start giving out angpows instead. Good thing I am in the States, because if I had to give out angpows to all my cousins, nieces, and nephews, I'd be in debt. I have SO MANY relatives, I'm not even kidding when I say the count is over 300 by now. That's what happens when your dad has 10 brother and sisters, with a bunch of married kids with children of their own...
Also! My mom sent me a bunch of CNY goodies~!! Pineapple tarts, kuih momo, the crispy fried wonton seaweed snack thingie, lemon cookies, cranberry shortbread (don't think this is CNY food per se, but it was good), acar, fish keropok, bak kua, and nian gao. Sometimes I feel like my mom is the real-life version of Cooking Mama. I look forward to her CNY care package every year, because I don't get to enjoy the delicious 团圆饭 my mom always prepares. :c
It's such a shame that CNY isn't celebrated as fervently as it is in Malaysia. I miss the week long holiday break and the crazy amount of open houses, fireworks, lion dances, and CNY food! Even though I've spent 7 CNY's in the States as of today, I can never get over how 冷清清 it is over here. It's almost as if it doesn't exist tbh, and here in California we're supposed to be super diverse.
I do have to give props to my Stats department for stepping up their game once again for throwing a Lunar New Year party (since like 90% of the department are Chinese students), complete with a Lion Dance performance! I had no idea our school had a lion dance club, and was about to dismiss the quality of the performance, but I was quite impressed. Not bad for students wor!
The performance brought back memories of my Uncle's open house. He has a lion dance performance, EVERY YEAR as far as I can remember.
Ahhhh~ so nostalgic. I wish I can go back at least one more time in the near future to celebrate it. But alas, this girl has to do ONE MORE YEAR of schooling, so I can scratch that off my list for now.
