Thift shopping
So I've been doing some thrift shopping lately because I've been hearing about all the good deals my friend May gets at the Salvation Army and other similar thrift stores, and oh my goodness, the prices at the SPCA truly are unbeatable.
Bought ourselves a really nice spice rack for only $6. It's one of those that spins and has labeled bottles. It actually looks unused for the most part. Everything is still intact and clean. I'm guessing it was a gift and the previous owner just doesn't cook often?
We also got ourselves 3 sets of hand weights, 3 lbs, 2 lbs, and 1 lb, for a total of $4.50. What a steal! ONE new 3 lb hand weight costs ~$4.50. A pair would bring the weights to about $9. I'm just so happy I found them at the thrift store before caving in and just buying them at Target.
Oh, we also got a tall bookshelf for our study room for $10!
We've been searching for a nice bookshelf on the Davis Free and For Sale Facebook page for a while but didn't see any tall ones. When John found this he went on a bidding war with another dude and the price went up to $30. Still relatively cheap for a bookshelf but not a great deal. Turns out the other person couldn't pick up the shelf until the week after, and the seller couldn't wait, so we won it for $29. John was so upset with the other bidder because he drove the price up so high for empty promises (somewhat) so he contacted the seller back and set his foot down for $10 if she wanted it gone by evening, even though we wanted it sooo badly. Needless to say she was unhappy, but she quickly gave in when he wouldn't budge. Guess she needed it gone more badly than us needing a shelf. ( •̀ᄇ• ́)ﻭ✧
Later on, we discovered the bookshelf didn't disassemble and couldn't fit into our Corolla, so about 1/3 of it hung out the back of the trunk LOL. Yes, it's illegal and dangerous but we took the chance cuz we already paid. No turning back now. Made it back safely and in one piece! Great deals require great sacrifices haha.
The only problematic thing about thrift shopping is having to constantly visit stores or check Craigslist because the items for sale are random everyday. We've been going for 4 days in a row to find a kickboard and buoy for swimming but no luck. Then there's also the part where you have to reason with yourself if you really need 3 more bowls or you just want them because they are only 50 cents each and will be gone tomorrow.
I ran into this problem on the fourth visit when I saw some really white and clean bowling shoes. Usually shoes are a miss because they don't fit, but I try them anyways just to see if the style works on me. Lo and behold, this pair actually fits!
*~~~~~*
John: Oh, looks nice. Why don't you get it?
Me: No, I'm not falling for the "buy everything you see at the thrift store if it fits or works well because you might not see it tomorrow" routine. I don't need these. Besides they are so nice I'm sure they're in the higher priced range. $10 might be cheap for shoes but we shouldn't just spend it.
John: But they look rarely worn, and it's even rarer to have shoes in your size.
Me: No! I wouldn't buy them...unless they are like $3.
John: *checks tag* They're $3 bucks a pair.
Me: DANG IT!
*~~~~~*
I bought the shoes.
I just hope I don't end up cluttering my house XD
