2015 Reflection
Happy New Year! While 2014 crept by very slowly, 2015 flew by in a blink of an eye. Perhaps it was because I didn't know what to expect since getting married, and was tackling things along the way. I remember thinking to myself not too long ago that I missed my chance writing a reflection post last year, but it's already 2016.
2015 was an interesting year. So many ups and downs, but perhaps one of the biggest change was being married to John and moving in together. I've known John for about 4 years before we got married, so I thought I knew everything about him. Moving in together shouldn't be too hard of an adjustment, right? But boy was I wrong. Hahahaha. John isn't the tidiest person, and neither am I tbh, so when we moved in together, I braced myself for the mess and prepared to let his habits slide so long as he let me off the hook sometimes. Who would've thought he'd all of a sudden decided to have a super tidy house? We argued about the stupidest things, like how clean the apartment should be, what time dinner should be ready, how to split chores etc. Still, after about 4 months in, we decided to just let things slide and have been much happier since.
Marriage issues aside, there was that nasty text from John's sis about wanting to cut us out of her life and whatnot. I recall John and I having to set up visits or dinner and lunch dates with his mom or dad separately from his sister's plans to avoid any stress of conflict on behalf of his parents. Hard to believe just a few days ago, his sister and her new husband are on talking terms with us again after their wedding. We're still as distant as ever, but at least they're civil to us now. Family is family after all, can't avoid each other forever. On the plus side, John's oldest sister and BIL got a lot closer to us as a result. They made a huge effort to connect with us despite being on the East Coast to make sure we didn't feel unloved since the incident, which I am truly grateful for. ❤︎
Some of the unexpected ups from this year was getting plugged into a new group of friends as well as professors from the stats department. One really unexpected friendship was with Lydia, whom I met right after returning to school through Alex. Now that I think about it, we've only known each other for a year, but I feel like we've known each other for longer. Having Hannah with me at Davis for the last few years, I never found a need to connect with others as much. I had someone so similar to me nearby all the time that I took friendships with others for granted. But I'm glad I reached out and made some new friends. Even though I only have one more quarter with them, I truly cherish how much they've helped me through classes, and made me realize that doing things with others can be much more productive and satisfying. I'm excited to graduate with them this upcoming summer!
Another up from this year was getting accepted into the masters program for statistics, and filing for graduation! I cannot believe this is happening. I have anticipated this season for YEARS. Now that it's happening I'm beside myself with joy and anxiety with what's yet to come.
Kind of a tangent, but my cooking has improved significantly this year! I attribute my improvement to John. Not because he's helped much in the kitchen, but because he is willing to eat all of my cooking and giving me positive feedback on how to improve and adjust the taste. I also realized that cooking for someone you love makes you strive to work harder (especially if your partner LOVES to eat).
The final pleasant experience of the year was celebrating our first year anniversary and visiting my family with John and his mom for Christmas! Had a low-key anniversary celebration since we were anticipating spending a lot on our Christmas trip. I wasn't too excited about having the MIL join us for Christmas because the last time they hung out (which was also the first time) was before we got married, and there were some arguments about setting the wedding date and such. I was worried they wouldn't get along, but we ended up having a great time. Pictures on Facebook can attest to how wonderful our Christmas vacation was. We ate soooooo much food all week. Good food. We sang along to YouTube Christmas karaoke songs, lit a fireplace for the first time and roasted marshmallows in it for smores, and took dozens of photobooth inspired photos. To sum up, our vacation was amazing and exactly what we needed to end the eventful year.
As I write this, I am still astounded at how all of this could have happen in the same year. Though the year started out sour, it ended on a really high note. I can't wait to see what's in store this year.
